I was a student in Roy's ethic's class, and I was having a terrible, miserable day. Towards the end of the class, he asked for a volunteer to role-play a suicide assessment with him. Nobody volunteered, so I finally raised my hand, despite being quite depressed. We did the role play, and I based it off a friend who had attempted suicide a few years prior. After class, Roy came up to me to check in. He had noticed I was miserable, and was worried that I was actually suicidal. I was not, but I was deeply touched and inspired by the fact that he noticed and took the time to connect individually. That action stays with me and inspires me to this day. I can only imagine that this was how he was with his friends, his family, and his clients. He cared. He made an extra effort to let people know. I am sending all of my love to those of you who were close to him. My heart goes out to you, and I hope that all these memories that people are sharing will give you some comfort.

Roy's inspirational teaching of ethics was one of the highlights of my time at PSU - he brought such joy and passion to a class that could have been dry and dull. His passion for the subject has stuck with me and inspired me to be a better clinician and to fight back against the ethical violations I see. I so appreciated his steadiness and presence and joy as an instructor and as a human being. I remember talking to him one day in 2015 about his plans for PCT and his hopes for the future. It's been a delight seeing PCT grow and seeing his success. He deserved every bit of it for the light he created in the world. My heart goes out to Roy's family, partners, and colleagues. He's gone too soon.
