I'm Connie Konikoff, a social worker in Louisiana. When I was the education chair of LACSW, we brought Roy to New Orleans to do Heart Centered Digital Ethics in 2014. That was the beginning of a wonderful connection shared with Roy. So many here appreciated his wisdom and calmness, yes - that deep gravity well of intelligence, warmth and calm, and certainly generosity of spirit and information. I particularly enjoyed Roy as we got to take him around uptown New Orleans when he was here and I got to know him a bit. I was so impressed with his tolerant attitudes and the fact that he was a self made man who made personal and professional life choices to make this world a better place. He clearly was more than a therapist, more than a digital ethics professional - he truly made it his mission to hold an open, calm space for therapists who really didn't have much of a clue on how to enter the digital world that he saw coming in 2014 before pretty much anyone in our professions did. I'm a spiritual person so I believe that he is at peace and his love lives forever. I also believe he would never have wanted to leave his beloved team or close friends, and certainly not his beloved wife, Electra, of whom he was So proud and loved so much. He talked about Electra on his trip down here to share how smart she is and how dedicated to healing in creative ways he found her as she was in her medical program at the time. He was someone who could make room for differences - heaven knows you couldn't get more different than the Deep South and Portland, but he found the common ground always and shared those differences with me in a way that left me expanded. On a professional level, people STILL talk about that wonderful workshop he did down here nearly 7 years ago! He is so warmly held and let me just say, I bet he and his team did create a useable professional will so that Person Centered Tech can continue the journey. Yall will have adjustments to make as you add to your team to fill in any gaps of knowledge, but please know that I know that there is never going to be any replacing Roy and anything you do to move forward, any lucky person's talents you add to your team, will surely be effective but we aren't asking him to be Roy. I hope you find exactly what you need at Person Centered Tech to keep progressing....Roy would want that, and he would be humble enough to know that he isn't the only person who can fill those clinical/digital shoes. As you get to a place where you can adjust your professional plan, just know that the integrity Roy stood for, and the integrity he required, is going to stand your reputation in good stead and will fill your hearts with the will to do what must be done. I am so very sorry that you are tasked with this giant adjustment at a time you are so personally bereft. People will give you space to adjust and I know you will find a way. There just isn't anyone who did what he did although he bragged on his friend, Rob Reinhardt's knowledge. I feel sure there will be a lot of support for Person Centered Tech as you figure it all out. On a personal note, I enjoyed Roy as a human, and admired his love for Electra, for whom I am holding space as you find your own way, Electra. Just know that he spread the love all over the world...not just for work but for you. He shared how he was grounded in you as you were/are in him. I have faith you will find your way, too because love that big pulls you through. Peace be with all of you. I have tears as I write this because he was just such a special fellow and it's a privilege to have known him. Connie Konikoff, Msw, Lcsw, Lafayette, Louisiana. Past president and current board member of the Louisiana Association of Clinical Social Workers.
